Our Focus
For too long, asthma and other respiratory diseases have had a disproportionate impact on our Black and Brown communities. This has led to a public health emergency where thousands of our community members die needlessly, where our children are forced to miss school and fall behind, and where our community faces threats from breathing toxic air just by going outside.
Consider
-
Black people are 3x more likely to die from asthma-related causes than non-Hispanic white populations
-
Black children are 7x more likely to die from asthma-related conditions than white children
-
1-in-4 Black adults are unable to afford asthma medications
Increased
Air Pollution
Rising Greenhouse Emissions
Rising Temperatures
Lack of Trees & Tree Cover for Shade
Unchecked Corporate Polluters
Healthcare Inequities That Leave Our Families without Safe, Affordable Medical Care
How Did This Happen?
Much of our current health emergency stems from government inaction and past explicitly racist policies that continue to impact our communities. This is what’s happening in your community right now, and it will continue if left unchecked.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
You Can Do Something About It
Clean Energy, Clear Lungs is an initiative seeking restorative environmental justice in a time of crisis. We seek equity and inclusion in environmental matters by educating community members on the impacts of air pollution on lung health, promoting the adoption of clean energy practices, and advocating for policies that reduce air pollution in communities of color.
It’s time to throw some shade at those responsible for polluting our communities through unregulated policies enabled by industry-friendly elected leaders.
We’ve seen how regular people can change the course of history when united toward a common goal. The time has come to stand up for our children, our families, and our communities to reverse the toxic history that has plagued our neighborhoods.
Swapping out outdated and energy-draining appliances for modern, energy-efficient alternatives.
Navigating tax credits and rebates that incentivize sustainable choices.
Ways to reduce energy consumption in the household.
Let's Hold Lawmakers Accountable
Among our list of long-term solutions,
Clean Energy, Clear Lungs aims to push our lawmakers to:
Plant more trees to provide more tree cover and shade
Adopt state-wide clean energy policies
Reduce pollution statewide, especially in communities of color
Provide accessible and culturally appropriate asthma care
Promote environmentally sustainable transportation
Most importantly, Clean Energy, Clear Lungs looks to create an unstoppable force of community members committed to fighting for clean air and environmental justice. We believe that there is strength in numbers, and only by uniting to face the equal rights battle of our lifetimes can we create real, effective, and lasting change.
