(PHOENIX, AZ - August 17, 2023) – As asthma and other respiratory problems continue to disproportionately impact our Black and Brown communities, the organization Arizona Coalition for Change is launching a new initiative, “Clean Energy, Clear Lungs,” to seek restorative environmental justice in a time of crisis. This campaign comes in response to the one year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act and a public health emergency in our communities of color, where Black children are 7 times more likely to die from asthma complications than their white peers.

The Arizona Coalition for Change will host a press conference on August 22, 2023 to introduce the Clean Energy, Clear Lungs campaign.

The Clean Energy, Clear Lungs campaign will educate community members on the impacts of air pollution on lung health and promote the adoption of clean energy practices. Movement leaders will also advocate for policies that reduce air pollution and improve lung health in communities of color.

“While the entire state of Arizona has been heating up over the past few decades, our Black and Brown communities continue to bear the brunt of the health impacts that result from climate change,” said Sena Mohammed, Executive Director at Arizona Coalition for Change. “This isn’t an accident, but rather a result of past discrimination that left our communities with more factories, toxic waste, and fewer trees to protect ourselves from increasing heat and greenhouse gas pollution.”

By working with lawmakers to support clean energy policies, Clean Energy, Clear Lungs is working to undo the toxic effects of polluted air and health issues in Arizona communities. This powerful initiative is ultimately dedicated to creating an unstoppable force of community members fighting for clean air and environmental justice in order to reverse this toxic legacy in our communities of color.
